How does Inkscape compare to Adobe Illustrator?

I've been in my Computer Graphics class for like a month now and I love it, especially using Adobe Illustrator lol. Ever since I first started using it I wanted a version for my computer at home and yikes, the prices are high. I read another question and someone recomended Inkscape. On a scale of 1 - 10 how does it compare to Illustrator CS5 (Mac OSX version)? And would you reccommend anything different?
