The score from PassMark is a little surprising, as the Phenom II X2 560 BE scored a much higher score than the Athlon II X2 265 processor. This is most likely due to the absence of L3 Cache in the Athlon II X2 265 and the 6MB of L3 for the Phenom II 560.

3DMark 06

The 3DMark 06 performance of the Athlon II X2 265, when paired with the GeForce GTX 280, was pretty respectable; it was actually faster than the Phenom II X2 560 BE at stock speeds. This once again shows the value of the Athlon II X2 265 and also shows that the GPU is much more important than the CPU in gaming. Overall, these numbers should be really attractive to a consumer who wants to get the most bang for the buck without the need to tweak/overclock their processor in order to get the most from their system.

Conclusion

The Athlon II X2 265 is a impressive processor when it comes down to the price per performance, as we have seen in this review. In order to keep the field level for both the Athlon II X2 265 and its bigger sister, the Phenom II X2 560 BE, we tested both processors on the same machine in order to show the results each delivers in the same environment, running the same tests.

The Phenom II X2 560 BE has its advantages when is comes to overclocking the processor to higher clock speeds than the Athlon II X2 265, and when doing so it took the performance lead across the board. The single drawback of the Phenom II is obviously its price premium over the Athlon II X2 265. This, of course, fits in to AMD’s target audience for the Phenom II and the Athlon X2: the Phenom is targeted towards overclockers and increased performance, while the Athlon II finds a better home among budget consumers, system integrators, and small businesses looking to get more for their money.

The Athlon II X2 265 was also tested while playing DIRT2 and the game-play was very smooth. If you’re looking to put together a gaming rig on a tight budget and don’t want to deal with overclocking, then I would recommend the Athlon II X2 265; with a price tag of $76, you simply can’t get better performance for the same cost.
