Kingston DataTraveler 150 32GB

Testing:

In order to test the Kingston DataTraveler 150 we sent it through the benchmarking programs HD Tune, CrystalDiskMark, and Flash Memory Toolkit.

HD Tune:

We ran HD Tune on the drive, using both the Benchmark tool and the File Benchmark tool. The Benchmark tool shows us the maximum, minimum, and average read speed of the flash drive. It also shows us the access time, burst rate, and CPU usage. The File Benchmark shows us how the MB/sec read and write times correspond to different sized files.

The Benchmark shows us our minimum read speed is 28.4MB/sec, with a maximum of 32.0MB/sec and an average of 31.0MB/sec. Our access time is 0.9ms, with a burst rate of 25.4MB/sec and 20.6% CPU usage. The CPU usage is a little higher than I would have hoped for, though most PCs today can handle it without a problem. The file benchmark helps doubly confirm the results as you can see the read speeds hovering around 30MB/s.

CrystalDiskMark:

CrystalDiskMark tests the average Sequential, 512K, and 4K speeds for read and write of the Kingston DataTraveler 150. We use different sized files (50MB, 100MB, 500MB, and 1000MB).

Our average is around 33MB/s, which is higher than our previous benchmark. The Kingston DataTraveler 150 performs exceptionally well. This test gives a good range of results that would coincide with real world results. The area where the drive does fall short however is in the 4K write speeds. This is why the drive is not Vista ReadyBoost certified.

Flash Memory Toolkit:

Flash Memory Toolkit closely resembles the previous benchmarks we've run today (as it's made by the makers of HD Tune), except that it's meant especially for flash devices.

This benchmark reaffirms what we've already seen. We averaged 31.0MB/s on the read test and ~12MB/s on the write tests.
