Let’s take a closer look at the official specifications for the FX-60. Below you can see that it sports all of the technology we are familiar with in the X2 lineup with the added benefits of being multiplier unlocked and clocked in at 2.6 GHz.

The FX-60 is the world’s first consumer based dual core multiplier unlocked processor. You will also note that the thermal rating is the same as the FX-55 processors. Essentially what we have here is two FX-55 processors on one die.

The FX-60 is a bit of an enigma if you look at AMD trends in product releases. The FX55 was a 2.6 GHz product part and the FX-57 is a 2.8 GHz part. Consumers could have expected an FX-59 running 3.0 GHz, but instead AMD releases the FX-60 skipping the trend and runs the FX-60 at a default of 2.6 GHz, the same speed as the FX-55. If one were to make predictions then you could predict that AMD’s next FX processor will be rated at 2.8 GHz and be a dual core processor, it would also probably be called the FX-62.

Is this new processor worthy of the FX-60 title if its rated 400 MHz less than a consumer expected FX-59? The rating does show the faith that AMD places in dual core technology. The real question is will the FX-60 play games better than a single core FX-57 running 200MHz higher? Read on to find out.
